à Monsieur Marcel Moyse et son trio
This piano trio in four movements was commissioned by the Moyse Trio (Marcel Moyse, flute; Blanche Honegger-Moyse, violin, and Louis Moyse, piano) and it was completed when the composer was living in Garches, France. when de Hartmann was at the height of his creative powers. The piece employs an exceptionally colorful palette and a wide variety of compositional styles. The opening theme, which sounds a bit like a nursery rhyme, unfurls through a dizzying series of permutations, including a Viennese waltz, a paraphrase of Chopin’s “Funeral March,” a nocturne, distinctive Ukranian rhythms, and a dense fugato section that culminates with a grandioso before returning to the main theme at the end.
