Thomas de Hartmann’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 51 was composed in 1935. This piece, along with his Symphonie-poème, Op. 50 (1934), marked the beginning of a new phase in his creative life. In 1921 he had given up writing in the classical idiom, and instead dedicated himself to helping his teacher, Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. De Hartmann returned to his classical style after 1929, and between 1935 and the late 1940s he embarked upon the composition of a number of large-scale works that represent a summing up of the many influences on his music. This violin sonata combines Romanticism, Impressionism, Eastern melody, and hints of bitonality.
